The MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development in KwaZulu-Natal, Super Zuma, and the Head of Department, Zibusiso Dlamini, recently visited the South African Sugar Association (SASA) at its KwaShukela Offices in Mount Edgecombe to get firsthand information and update on the sugar industry, which is critical for the rural economies of KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.

The MEC team met with the SASA Executive Management, led by Executive Director Trix Trikam, who provided a detailed overview of the industry including its challenges, opportunities, the all-important Sugarcane Value Chain Master Plan to 2030 master plan, which incorporates crucial elements pertaining to the optimisation of the local market and the industry’s diversification efforts. It was a fruitful engagement which cemented relations between the parties and augured well for the continued existence and sustainability of the sugar industry.
