In the wake of the devastating tornado that struck Tongaat, leaving many families homeless and claiming several lives, the South African Farmers Development Association (SAFDA) stepped forward to offer much-needed relief and support to the affected community.

SAFDA’s Executive Chairman, Dr Siyabonga Madlala, leading from the front.
Demonstrating their commitment to social responsibility and community upliftment, SAFDA donated 300 food parcels, 300 blankets, secondhanded clothes that were collected from SAFDA employees and stakeholders and building material to the displaced families, ensuring they have access to essential supplies during this challenging time. The tornado, which swept through the region with intense winds, caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure, displacing numerous families and leaving them without basic necessities. In response, SAFDA quickly mobilised its resources to provide immediate assistance to those in need. The distribution of food parcels, blankets and secondhanded clothes aimed to address the urgent needs of the affected families, offering them some comfort and relief as they navigate the aftermath of the disaster.
Recognising the ongoing needs of the community, SAFDA also launched an initiative encouraging its members and staff to donate clothing items they no longer use. This call to action was met with overwhelming support, resulting in a significant collection of clothes that were then distributed to the affected families. The successful initiative highlighted the generosity and solidarity within the SAFDA community, showcasing their collective commitment to helping those in need.
SAFDA's efforts have not gone unnoticed, receiving positive reception and heartfelt gratitude from the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government who had a meeting with all stakeholders and organisations that heeded to the call and assisted the people of Tongaat. The timely and compassionate response has made a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by the tornado, providing them with essential supplies and a sense of hope amid their struggles.
The organisation remains dedicated to working alongside local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that the affected families receive the assistance and resources they need to rebuild their lives. SAFDA's response to the Tongaat tornado disaster underscores the organization's core values which some of them are Co-operation, Profitable Partnership, Integrity and Accountability. By standing with the affected families during this difficult time, SAFDA has exemplified the true spirit of Ubuntu, demonstrating that together, we can overcome even the most challenging circumstances.
