The South African Farmers Development Association (SAFDA) Communications recently had the privilege of visiting sugarcane growers at Jozini in KwaJobe area. These growers, who supply their sugarcane to Felixton, have exemplified the power of unity and self-empowerment by addressing challenges head-on and creating solutions from within their community.

Facing the pressing challenge of the pace of their work, the growers sought assistance from Tongaat Hulett Limited to facilitate a unique savings initiative. By agreeing to set aside R25 per ton of sugarcane, each of the 90 growers contributed to a collective fund. After a year, this initiative bore fruit: the community pooled their resources to purchase a tractor with a trolley, significantly enhancing their operational efficiency in the fields.
Sandile Mangeni, a committee leader, highlighted the transformative impact of being part of SAFDA: "Being part of SAFDA played a crucial role in educating us and helping us grow as black growers. They gave us hope that we have the power to do anything for ourselves." This sentiment echoes throughout the KwaJobe farming community, where the growers' initiative stands as a testament to what can be achieved when individuals come together with a shared purpose. Their success is not just measured in tangible assets like the new tractor but also in the strengthened sense of community and self-reliance.
Despite their success, the growers in KwaJobe still face significant challenges, particularly regarding infrastructure. The roads leading to their fields are often hard to use during rain, forcing a suspension of operations. This persistent issue underscores the need for government intervention to improve these critical access routes.
The story of KwaJobe's growers serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through unity and self-determination. As members of SAFDA, these growers have shown that by pooling resources and working collaboratively, they can overcome obstacles and improve their livelihoods. SAFDA remains committed to supporting and empowering black growers across South Africa. By fostering education, providing resources, and advocating for necessary infrastructure improvements, we continue to build a stronger, more resilient community of sugarcane growers. Together, we can achieve more. Together, we are stronger.
