The KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo recently visited the South African Sugar Association.

Dr Dhlomo expressed his gratitude for the support he received from SITFE (Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education) towards his studies from 1976-1979.

The recent 50th SITFE anniversary, he said, reminded him that he needed to personally register his gratitude to the sugar industry leadership for the three-year support that contributed to his career and where he is today. He encouraged the industry to continue this noble programme.

SASA’s participation in local health promotion activities and growing relationship with the MEC have opened up opportunities to establish SASA as a prominent and critical partner of DOH. The sugar industry has developed a special relationship with the KZN Health MEC through support of health awareness days in the province, especially diabetes awareness days held jointly with KZN Diabetes South Africa (DSA). Dr Dhlomo is a well-known champion and front-runner in the promotion of healthy lifestyles for all. He believes that he has to lead by example, as such has personally participated in various sporting activities including the gruelling Comrades Marathon.

SASA has funded a number of activities related to the prevention of non-communicable diseases through health promotion. These include rendering nutrition talks to DSA support groups, health workers support to attend DESSA (Diabetes Education Society of South Africa) basic diabetes training courses and hosting exhibitions to promote SASA materials that are used by health workers for patient counselling. In the 2015/16 financial year, SASA was a very proud main sponsor of the KZN Global Diabetes Walk which attracted hundreds of walkers of all ages.
