WOMEN: THE HEARTBEAT  OF THE SUGAR INDUSTRY

The role played by women professionals is indispensable in ensuring the success, continued existence and sustainability of the sugar industry in South Africa.

August is Women’s Month, the South African Sugar Journal would like to salute and pay tribute to Imbokodo… all phenomenal women from the South African Sugar Association, the South African Cane Growers’ Association, the South African Farmers Development Association, the South African Sugar Millers’ Association (comprising Tongaat Hulett, Illovo Sugar South Africa, RCL FOODS, Gledhow Sugar Company, Umfolozi Sugar Mill and UCL Company).

The sung and unsung heroines of the industry are highly appreciated for their sterling efforts, especially during this difficult time as the industry is in a state of crisis. Those whose images and names are not here are equally commended for their immense contribution to the industry. Imbokodo has been crucial in enabling the industry to keep its head above water. The former First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama, captured it aptly when she remarked: “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.”

Wathinta abafazi, Wathinta Imbokodo! Womandla!
